Employee Training Metrics: How You Can Measure The Impact Of Your Employee Training Efforts

Employee training metrics are approaches through which a training manager can measure the effectiveness of a training program, evaluate success and different components of training sessions, and use insights to line up the training with the objectives. There are multiple evaluation models that you can use depending on your training programs, such as Kirkpatrick’s 4 Levels of Evaluation, Brinkerhoff’s Success Case Method, Anderson’s Value of Learning Model, and more.

Employee training strengthens the workforce to reach the organization’s goals. You can use any of these models, but the real challenge is gaining effectiveness and tracking the performance of employees over time. Organizations often don’t factor in how to measure the impact of employee training efforts. No worries! Here are a few tips on how you can measure the effectiveness of a training program and improve it.

1. Regulate assessments

To ascertain the contribution of training to the goal of the company, employee assessment is a dynamic way to assess growth and learner retention. The assessment could be in the form of a quiz, riddle, or survey, which helps measure features like:

  • Return on investment (ROI)
  • Return on expectations (ROE)
  • Benchmark and Capability
  • Learning Engagement

These employee training assessments could be used in pre-training to understand employees’ baseline performance, in mid-training to track improvements, and in post-training to understand the differences inculcated after completion of training.

2. Map to training KPIs

Employee training tracking software helps you measure employees’ progress toward an objective. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are tools that help identify knowledge gaps and improvise training metrics. A smart, measurable, specific, time-bound, attainable, and relevant KPI helps you track points like:

  • Periodical sales growth
  • Conversion rates
  • Order fulfillment cycle time
  • Customer reservation rate

Business success is directly influenced by what tracks and metrics you use which also helps you perfectly assess training effectiveness once it’s completed.

3. Learner’s feedback

One of the best ways to evaluate training is via learner feedback. Evaluating the increase in skills, attitudes, and knowledge after training helps in the company’s growth adversely. Feedback brings you an insight into what’s working and what’s not. It helps you measure:

  • Employees progression rates
  • Employees completion rates
  • Employees learning experience

You can track employees’ knowledge and experience through written exams, simulated or real tasks, and online tests. This may help you administer improved training in the future.

4. Scrutinize employees’ behavior

Post a training session, employees tend to apply new skills, thought processes, or procedures from the training. A productive training program will transform learners in observable ways. Observing employees’ behavior will help you measure:

  • Learners’ confidence while sharing knowledge and skills with their peers
  • Skill implementation in work
  • Learner’s drop off rate

However, these impacts could be measured in several ways, including on-job observations, focus groups, customer complaints, surveys, comments, interviews with colleagues and supervisors, online self-analysis questionnaires, and more. When employees indulge in training knowledge and skills in their mundane, the training becomes valuable and significant learning takes place.

5. Identify employee engagement

The more engaging training is, the more likely employees can finish compulsory training and thus will continue learning individually. When employee engagement is effective and fills the skill gaps, it increases operational efficiency and optimizes procedures in the workplace. It measures:

  • Employee satisfaction rate
  • Investment of time and effort by employees
  • Course completion rate
  • Employees performance

Identifying employee engagement rates determines whether the content fills any knowledge gaps and offers worthy employees.

However, training is all about enhancing individual and company performance, but not every benefit of it can be measured. Therefore, you need to make sure that the preferred employee training metric is giving you the results that you want. Perhaps, these above-mentioned tips will help you analyze the effectiveness of your training program and improvise it accordingly.
