WrestleMania 39 is just a matter of months away, but have plans for the Showcase of the Immortals changed in recent weeks? It had been expected for the majority of the year that the reigning defending Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns would face off against his cousin The Rock at the Show of Shows. Those thoughts appeared to be more of a probability than a possibility when the WWE revealed its promotional poster for the upcoming Royal Rumble event.
The poster features bolts of electricity flowing through it. The Rock is known as the Most Electrifying Man in All of Entertainment. Many think that this may be a nod to the fact that The Great One would be showing up at the Royal Rumble event, which takes place at the end of January from San Antonio’s Alamodome.
And the probability of Dwayne Johnson appearing turned into a near certainty when Usos – Reigns’ real-life cousins and cornerstones of his bloodline faction – announced that “every generation” of the bloodline would feature at the Raw XXX event, the thirtieth anniversary of the famed Monday night show.
But those plans were shelved almost immediately. The head of creative at WWE, Triple H, is instead opting to hold a trial for Sami Zayn rather than the planned “every generation” segment. And now one has to wonder if the planned match between The Rock and Reigns has been shelved permanently. Famed wrestling reporter Dave Meltzer recently said that Johnson wouldn’t be in shape in time for Mania, which could leave the company’s plans up in arms.
So which direction will they head now, and what match will headline WrestleMania?
Roman Reigns vs Cody Rhodes
Another plan that the company had in the works was Roman Reigns vs Cody Rhodes. Ever since The American Nightmare’s return home at last year’s WrestleMania, Rhodes made his plans crystal clear to the WWE Universe. He wants to win the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.
As such, OddsChecker, which compares WWE odds and offers, has made Rhodes the favorite to win this year’s Royal Rumble match. Should he win the 30-man over-the-top-rope extravaganza, he would punch his ticket to the main event of WrestleMania to face a champion of his choosing. And with Roman Reigns holding both World Championships, that would put the American Nightmare on a collision course with the Tribal Chief.
Rhodes has been out of action since early June. Back then, he tore his Pectoral Muscle clean off the bone. Somehow, however, Rhodes still managed to wrestle against Seth Rollins inside Hell in a Cell. And not only did he wrestle, but he and The Visionary gave the WWE their first main roster five-star match in over a decade. That will have built Rhodes plenty of favors with the powers that be at WWE.
Could that be the new direction the company take when it comes to the main event of Mania?
Roman Reigns vs Sami Zayn
If you’d have told us last year, when Sami Zayn was losing to Jackass-star Johnny Knoxville at WrestleMania 38, that we’d be considering him as the potential main event a year later, we’d have laughed you out of the country. But outside of the brilliant Reigns, Zayn’s integration into the Bloodline has been the most engrossing story in all of professional wrestling throughout the last 12 months.
In recent weeks, it has looked more and more likely that Reigns and the Bloodline could be turning on Zayn, and if that happens prior to the Royal Rumble match, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Canadian sensation usurp Rhodes and the other superstars in the match and punch his own ticket to the show of shows.
Let’s face it, Reigns vs Zayn has had an almost year-long build, much more than that of Rhodes and Reigns, who haven’t even interacted since the American Nightmare returned to the company.
